Another lifesaver- Subway expanded it’s $5 footlong deal to every sub! Can’t beat 2 feet of sweet onion chicken teriyaki for 10 bux to feed 2 dudes on the run. First time I had one was in a Subway in Ireland (probably the only non-fried foot I ate on that trip). Been hooked ever since as there isn’t much else I would probably eat in the way of non-boarshead cold-cuts. But to be honest I’ve probably only had 4 feet of chicken teriyaki in all of 2008 b/c I couldn’t afford the sandwich at 8 bux plus, and generally it’s stuff I’ll only eat on the road. Same with McDonalds, which I get sick of pretty fast. Wendy’s is my usual fast-food fix b/c they have decent chicken on the dollar menu. I’ll be getting my fill of Subway though I’m sure, if they make this new stimulus promo as standard as gov’t bailouts for gas-guzzling car companies …

I love surfing as much as anything, but honestly if I did that proximity wingsuit stuff I doubt I’d see much watertime ever again. Nuts!
Matt Collins
There’s a lot of good surf photogs in the NY Metro area and a few great ones. For coverage work I think Mike Nelson is one of the best. For creative surf shots a handful of guys really stand out in my mind. Jack Brull, Chris Gentile, Matt Clark, and Matt Collins are four guys from around here that are probably at the top of my creative list. Here’s a recent shot by Collins. Check the links below for more stuff by him.

Faktion Slipstream Fish
New sled made a reality by New York shaper: Petro. Board-snobs known to only ride shapes that exit through Moonlight on the West Coast are quickly becoming believers in the glass-work by local legend: Ed Fawess. Petro sculpts, Ed laminates, and Petro does the rest. Take your idea to the duo if you want quality shortboard concepts executed locally.

If you want the ultimate Long Island board for all conditions up to a couple feet overhead I highly suggest you check out Petro’s, “Quadzilla” four-fin fish. But don’t stop here on the East Coast, my quad spent a month in Bali and handled almost every spot well at small to medium size and didn’t start to get squirly until I had it in medium Nusa Dua *with plastic fins (which at the main peak was probably a little past my caliber on the one day they said it was 5ft [Bali-size, which would have been huge for NY where when it’s overhead we say it’s 4ft, but nobody really calls that “big” here, more like “good”]).

Violence with Grace - TJ Gumiela
From what I notice some groms are “explosive” on a board but they usually aren’t the same kids I would deem “consistent.” And especially around here in NY I think you seldom see any one surfer have a solid grasp on the two traits enough to utilize them both at one time in harmonious fashion. TJ Gumiela seems to have harnessed a balance b/t each realm making him not only fun to watch, but also a quiet threat in regional surf events. In a place where getting paid to surf is a rarity, TJ has worked his bum off to beat and stay ahead of the curve and is now on salary with Zoo York. Not to mention all along the way he’s done so with a humble head (a direct reflection of good parenting I suppose).
If you don’t know him yet, look out for TJ as you’re officially on notice. Under the mentoring of the Skudin Clan (so it seems), TJ is one of the young guns putting a torch to the future ass of NY surfing. And “Who am I?,” you might ask. I’m nobody but a guy at the beach with his eyes open. And not that he’s asking me but if he was my advice to TJ might go a little something like this:
“Youth is KING! … Learn it, know it, and own it before you’re old and washed like the rest of us [or in my case, just plain old]. Make sure you enjoy the ride and have fun growing. Don’t submit to any pressure as you’ve already made New Yorkers proud. Keep up the good work and progression as long as you can so when you raise you’re own little family of surfstars you’ll have something to brag about.” Well, he already has a few things to brag about but I’m sure you won’t hear him talking about himself. Whatever, you know what I mean. Just check the kid out, he’s a solid surfer and he’s really nice.
